How to Enhance willpower and motivation for Success

image

Willpower is essential to the accomplishment
of anything worthwhile. – Brian Tracy

Enhancing your will-power, is likely one of the best training programs you can invest in. Why? let’s start by differentiating motivation and willpower.

In philosophy there is the concept of the Will, the power or faculty of the human psyche that
enables a human being to act purposefully. By our wills we act with
a goal or purpose in mind. Our motivation to act can be purposeful, driven by the will, but it
need not be so. Motivation could be
the result of subconscious factors, or of forces or influences acting upon us like what we read or hear and so in. If you have motivation to do
something, it means you have a good
reason to do something. You know
doing this will help you. You will probably want to do this.

Nonetheless, Motivations has an impressive benefit like
It increases your desire and likelihood to take action.
It gets you excited and is exciting
It boosts your determination
It generates positive thoughts
But most importantly, we need to be strong-willed to execute that task in our mind.

Where the willingness is great, the difficulties cannot be great. – Niccolo Machiavelli

This explains why most of us after being told or haven read about something we tend to try it out after a while the urge suddenly leaves. I can recall vividly when I went for an event on some certain things to do and stuff to buy which would have been of benefit to me, I was so eager to do them all ASAP I even told most of my friends about it as funny as it may sound, it took just 5 days and it was as though a magical spell was lifted, I stopped! same goes for people who might have been motivated to quit smoking when they think about how
much healthier they will be if they quit, or how much money they will save if they don’t have to buy cigarettes anymore. However, just thinking about how nice it will be isn’t enough to actually stop. You need something else to make you stop thinking and take action.
Having willpower means you are strong enough (mentally) to force yourself to do something, even if it’s hard or you don’t want to. It’s hard to stop smoking, but with enough willpower, it is possible.
People with lots of motivation, but no willpower, probably will not be able to quit smoking. However, people with lots of willpower can make changes even with little motivation.

In an article Stephen Guise said,

“For lasting change to occur, it’s not motivation, but habits that help make or break success… habits that lead to actions, which are a direct result of willpower.”

Here Are Some Ideas To Strengthen Your Will and Become A More Stronger Person:

  1. Do not let your mind float like a piece of paper in the wind.

Work hard to keep it focused at all times. When doing a task, think of nothing else. When walking to work, count the steps that it takes to get all the way to the office. This is not easy but your mind will soon understand that you hold its reins and not vice versa. Your mind must eventually become as still as a candle flame in a corner where there is no draft. More like meditation.

  1. Your will is like a muscle.

You must first exercise it and then push before it gets stronger. This necessarily involves short term pain but be assured that the improvements will come and will touch your character in a most positive way. When you are hungry, wait another hour before your meal. When you are labouring over a difficult task and your mind is prompting you to pick up the latest magazine for a break or to get up and go talk to a friend, curb the impulse. Soon you will be able to sit for hours in a precisely concentrated state. That’s meditation again. Sir Issac Newton, one of the greatest classical physicists the world has produced, once said: “if I have done the public any service, it is due to patient thought.” Newton had a remarkable ability to sit quietly and think without interruption for very long periods of time. If he can develop this, why can’t we? I’m not good at this yet but just the little I’ve been doing, I’ve got quite astonishing results.
3.Keep a Journal

Decide what you want and make every decision in every moment one that supports that
Outcome. This is really of great importance you know. I’ve kept a journal for about 8yrs and counting the results are quite massive. Writing things down and keeping a journal is a
great way to keep your resolutions or goals in check and notice the patterns that sabotage your willpower.

We first need to understand why we sabotage ourselves before we can create new outcomes in
life

4. You can also build your will-power by restraint in your conduct with others.

I noticed this when I decided to Speak less. Ever since I learnt this, it’s been of great help in developing me more. okay here’s how, use the 60/40 Rule(listen 60% of the time and speak a mere 40%.) This will not only make learn much wisdom as everyone we meet, every day has something to teach us. Also restrain the urge to gossip or to condemn someone who you feel has made a mistake. Stop complaining and develop a cheerful, vital and strong personality.

5. When a negative thought comes to your mind, immediately replace it with one that is positive.

Positive always dominates over the negative and your mind has to be conditioned to think only the best thoughts. Negative thinking is a conditioned process whereby the negative patterns are established over and over. Rid yourself of any limitations and become a powerful positive thinker. Start Now!

Think Positive, Think Different.

Have you been faced with a circumstance where you got to use your will-power, what ways did you adopt to enhance it?
