Just be yourself (2 mins)

Live authentically. Why would you continue to compromise something that’s beautiful to create something that is fake?
Steve Maraboli

I have a confession to make, I was comparing myself with others a lot. Guess what? I noticed I’m never going to be like you. I could try and try with every ounce of my being, but I still would be a lesser version of you than you already are. I could put all of my focus into acting like you, talking like you, writing like you, being like you – and you would still be better at being you than I ever could.

I know that this seems like a silly thing to say because it seems sort of obvious, but I still think it needs to be said. Just felt like sharing this after touring around Deb Cowdrey’s gratifying blog.

So many of us spend more hours than we probably care to admit to comparing ourselves to others. We see that they do something well, and we want to do it better. And when we can’t, we beat ourselves up about it and tear ourselves down for not being better at________.

I certainly have been guilty of comparing myself to others and feeling that I wasn’t measuring up.
But you know what I have realized? Everyone that I have compared myself to would be an extremely watered-down version of me if they
tried to be me. I mean think about it, If they tried to write like me or
think like me or act like me, I would always be a better version of me than they ever could. It serves both ways, doesn’t it?

So, wouldn’t it make sense for all of us to stop trying to be someone that we aren’t and instead focus on simply being who we are

Think about how much less energy we would expend if we went about our days just being ourselves. If we focused on being the best version of ourselves that we could be, it would still take much less energy than trying to be
someone we aren’t. The world needs all of us to shine and share our gifts.

So, the next time you start comparing yourself to someone else, thank them for doing what they do best: being exactly who they are. And then thank yourself for doing the same. You’re awesome, and amazing.

What are you thankful for?

  1. You said that so beautifully!! You are exactly right, all the energy wasted on trying to be someone else could be put to making ourselves the best that we can be!! God gave us all our own unique gifts and blessings and it’s up to us to embrace them and share them with the world. You are doing that fabulously…you are awesome!! Keep up the great work… 🙂

  2. It’s important to learn to relate, not compare. There will always be a blog that is bigger and gets more readers or engagement than your own. It’s important not to get in a comparison game with those bloggers. Instead, it’s important to find the similarities and lessons that you can learn from those people, while at the same time, staying focused on your own unique style. In the end, you’ll protect your sanity and make quicker progress. Great post:)

  3. ‘But you know what I have realized? Everyone that I have compared myself to would be an extremely watered-down version of me if they
tried to be me.’ If only we can always bear that in mind when judging ourselves and others!

  4. I definitely agree with your post. I am also guilty of comparing myself to others but when I feel a fang of jealousy biting my self worth, I would remind myself that I can do something that they can’t. Thank you for this thought provoking and inspiring article.

  6. My struggle, if this is what is the best term for it, is I don’t compare myself with anyone. I am well aware there is only one me and I strive to be me everyday. However, the people around me respond negatively or believe I am better than they are or worse still, feel I am too goo to be true therefore making me ‘fake’ or ‘false’. I am far from perfect and do not intend to be perfect other than to become the best version of me possible. Yes it is sad, it hurts some days too, so I keep going. This is what I am thankful for most…somehow, in someway, I am unstoppable…to love, be love, learn and grow even when I have been in tainted soil or surrounded by the opposite. No saint, no martyr, just human who feels the world needs more love.
